Low wages for waitressing

Waitressing in Castellón is not very well paid. I was thinking about getting a part-time job while I was studying in Castellón in 2003. But then people told me that the average hourly rate for waitressing in a bar/café is not more than 4 Euros! I decided living on my student loan then.

Bikes for students

If you study at Jaume I you can rent a bike for the time while you are there. I think I paid only 30 Euros for about 5 months. The bikes are not flash and without gear change, but it's great when you don't have a car. I even used to go to the beach by bike or I drove through the mandarin- and orange plantations near the city. You have to watch out in the city though - people are not really used to cyclists here.

Low priced Chinese restaurants

Castellón has heaps of really cheap but good Chinese restaurants. You normally only pay about 4 Euros for a meal.

Go to Valencia by train

The trains are a much better alternative than buses in Castellón. Especially when you want to go to Valencia it is very handy to catch the train. It only takes about 45 min and I think one trip only costs about 3 Euros. Take a light jacket with you in summer as they are air-conditioned and sometimes a bit cold.

Sagunt

The ancient city of Sagunt is definitely worth a visit. Walk up to the castle and enjoy the views from up here. From Castellón it takes about half an hour by train to get here. From the train station you can walk up to the castle which takes about an hour.

Walking through the city

If you go for a walk through the city in Castellón there are a few places and buildings you shouldn't miss: Plaza Mayor There are four main historically important buildings at this beautiful old plaza which is also the centre of Castellón. The octagonal bell tower "El Fadrí" built between 1591 and 1604, the beautiful town hall, the cathedral Santa Maria and the market hall. Plaza Santa Clara Here you'll find lots of cafés where you can rest after being shopping at Zara for example. Last but not least don't miss out on the bullfighting area and the impressive colourful hand sculpture in the centre.

Basilica de la Mare de Déu de Lledó

The beautiful basilica was built in the 16th century. If you go inside you can have a look old paintings, capes, figures and gold smith works. The Saint of Lledó is Castellón's patron saint since 1922.
