Café Pasternak

This is one of our favourite little cafés in Berlin. Breakfasts feature Russian pancakes and hearty winter dishes, and the atmosphere is a mixture between museum and 19th century dining room (without being stuffy). Opposite the Wasserturm, it gets the afternoon sun in winter - enjoy :)

Free classical concerts

Every 1st Sunday of a month, St Hedwig Cathedral in Berlin (close to Gendarmenmarkt) offers free classical concerts at 7.30pm. Don't forget the blankets in winter - or clap hard to stay warm!

A Saturday in Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg is arguably the most picturesque, hip, and fashionable neighbourhood in Berlin today (2008). Its beauty IS spellbinding, from the historical buildings to the weekend market at Kollwitz Platz, the abundance of cute cafés and stylish restaurants etc. You hear quite a bit of English when walking along, from well-heeled tourists to expats who prefer the international scene of Prenzlauer Berg to the 'old West', like e.g. Savigny Platz which seems slightly faded compared to Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte. For those with kids: what a great playground in the middle of the market!

Bergmannstrasse, Kreuzberg

A hub for all things good-life in Kreuzberg, here you'll find great weekend cafés, antique shops, second hand clothes and bookshops galore.

Nymphenburger Strasse, Schöneberg

This gem of a street is this little side street off the Schöneberger Volkspark - I'd be interested to learn more of its history, its buildings certainly hint on some larger than life stories of the past... beautiful.

Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz, Friedenau, Berlin

Old Friedenau is laid out around Friederich-Wilhelm Platz; small residential streets spread out from here. Shopping is all withing easy walking distance. Not short of nice buildings, as so often in Berlin.

Arndtstrasse, Kreuzberg

Time travel on from Fidicinstrasse down to Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg, passing through this sleepy, wonderful street and its patrician houses....
