Culture & Living Museums
Innumerable museums for every taste I'm a real Berliner, but I have to admit that I haven't managed to see all of Berlin's museums to this day - there are just too many of them (more than 175!!).
The museums have something to offer for every taste. These are my favourites (but this is only a small selection): Gemäldegalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof (Museum for Contemporary Art), Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), Helmut Newton Foundation (Museum for Photography), Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery), Bodemuseum (Sculpture Collection, re-opened in 2006). The best thing about these state museums is that they offer free entry on Thursdays from 18:00-22:00. But otherwise admissions are at reasonable prices and there are always concessions for students, unemployed and elderly people.
Most museums are situated in and around central Berlin (suburb: Mitte). Visit the Museumsinsel (between Hackescher Markt and Friedrichstraße), as the most interesting and oldest museum buildings are concentrated here. Tourists are offered a special combined ticket which allows them to visit all of the 5 museums on the Museumsinsel at one weekend.
For further information and an overview of the state museums and their exhibitions, opening hours, addresses and tickets visit: http://www.smb.spk-berlin.de/smb/index.php/
Of course, Berlin also has lots of art institutes and private art galleries, more about that on this webiste (topic art galleries)
