Frequently Asked Questions

Q Do I have to register to use goGunter?

A No - you can browse and read all the information that’s available on the site without registering. You just need to register to post a question or write an article on your favourite city.

Q What other benefits are there when I register?

A When registered you are able to view other members’ profiles and can then also directly get in touch with someone whose article you liked or who shares similar interests in your new city. Registration is absolutely FREE and always will be.

Q How can I upload an article?

A First you need to register with goGunter. Once you have registered, click on the “Add +” button on the right-hand side menu. If your article doesn’t just relate to one city but to a whole country (say, how to get insurance in Morocco), simply select the country and then click “National” when selecting the “City” you want to post the article in.

Q How do I register with goGunter?

A Click the “Register Now” button on the top right-hand side of the screen, or “Not registered?” on the left-hand side, or click on “sign up here to add content” on the homepage. Once you are on the “Become a Gunter” page, fill in at least the mandatory fields (marked with a star), upload pictures and tell others what you love about your city, from your favourite weekend café to the butcher with the freshest cuts in town - you name it. You can edit your profile at any time later, just make sure to remember your username (if you forget your password, we can always email it to you).

Q What’s the difference between registering as an “Active Gunter” and a “Fly-by Gunter”?

A Staying “Fly-by” hides your profile page from other members, so that you cannot be contacted by other members. You can still post articles and ask questions as a “Fly-by” user.

Q If I register as an “Active Gunter”, will others be able to see my email address?

A Your email address will never be visible to other users. Any message from other users is forwarded to your email address via the goGunter system to ensure your privacy at all times. Only if you reply to a message with an email will other users be able to see your email address.

Q What happens with the private data I upload onto the site?

A Your email address will never be visible to other users, and goGunter will never pass your email address or any other private data to any third party. Make sure to upload only information that you want the public to see. If, for example, you add a comment to an article and include your private telephone number, everyone will be able to read your comment, not only the article’s author.

Q I can’t find the city I want to upload an article for - what can I do?

A This means that no one has registered yet for this city: But once you have posted your article, chances are you will find other readers who are interested in the same city, because your article will put this city automatically into the goGunter directory of cities. So if your city doesn’t appear in the drop-down menu for “City”, just select “Add New City” and write the name of the new city in the field underneath. Go on - put your city on the map!

Q I just submitted an article but now can’t find it anywhere - what happened?

A Each article runs first through the goGunter content management system to ensure no inappropriate content or pictures/videos are uploaded to the site. You will see your article online within 24hrs after posting it. Also, make sure that your article was posted to the right city and category. If you unintentionally attributed an article to a wrong city or category and can’t remember where to, try searching for keywords in your article to locate the article again, then edit it and correct the city or category attribution.

Q I have uploaded an article, but want to change the text/pictures/video now - how do I do that?

A Go to your article and click “Edit article” under the headline. You must be logged in to edit an article you have written.

Q Can I edit someone else’s article?

A No, but you can add a comment and send the goGunter team feedback if you are concerned about an article on the site.

Q I tried to add a category to a city, but it didn’t show up so far in the directory.

A When you are registered as an “Active Gunter”, you can suggest new categories for your city. New categories need to be approved by the goGunter team. If the new category is really useful and not covered yet by another existing category and makes content easier to find, it will be uploaded within 24 hrs. Thanks for your contribution to the site!

Q My article was at the top spot in my city’s category last week, but now it keeps dropping down in ranking. Why is that?

A Articles are ranked by an algorithm of date posted and Gunter Points of the author. So the more Gunter Points you have, the longer your articles will stay on a higher ranking.

Q What are Gunter Points?

A The number of Gunter Points a user has shows the amount of content he or she has contributed and how valuable his/her help is to users who are relocating to another city.

Every registered user can collect Gunter Points. They are collected in 3 ways:

  1. Contributing content: 10 Gunter Points for contributing content in a post you upload to the site.
  2. 20 Gunters by registering as an Active Gunter.
  3. Being rewarded Gunter Points by readers: under each article you will find an “Award a Gunter Point” link - use them generously for articles you find useful, informative or just plain fun to read.

And Gunter Points never expire.

Q My text disappeared after writing an article and trying to upload it. The system also informed me that I’m not logged in...

A After a longer period of inactivity, the server can log a user out, even if the user currently reads an article or types text into a text field. Whenever you plan to write a longer article or expect your research (looking for addresses, pictures, videos etc.) will take longer, write your article first with a word editor (e.g. MS Word) and save it. Then upload it when you are ready.

Q Why does the upload of my pictures take so long?

A If your pictures are large files, it can take a bit longer to upload, especially when you submit several new pictures for an article. If your pictures are larger than 2MB each and you try to upload them all at once, it can happen that the system fails to display all your pictures immediately and you have to upload the remaining pictures later. To save you time, choose pictures with a lower resolution: for Internet publishing, they look just as good as higher resolution pictures. When using Microsoft Windows, you can easily reduce the size of an existing picture by right-clicking the picture with your mouse and selecting “Open with... Microsoft Office Picture Manager”; then select “Edit Pictures...” and “Compress Pictures”.

Q I have never used YouTube - how can I put videos in my articles?

A To easily publish a video in an article on goGunter, all you need is a digital camcorder (today, also many digital cameras have video modes which are great for shooting videos for the Internet) and an account with www.youtube.com. Just sign up at their site (it’s free), upload your video file and then copy & paste the so-called “embed code” (careful: not the so-called “link” for the video) into the YouTube Video field of goGunter’s Add Content page. You can remove videos from your articles at any time later (same with pictures).

Q What about copyright?

A It goes without saying that you should only upload material which does not infringe on any third party’s copyright. It’s much more fun when the text, pictures and videos are your own! Vice versa, goGunter will retain all copyright of content uploaded to its site (which can, of course, be edited by the author at all times simply by logging in to the site and editing the article).

Q How do I use the map function when posting an article?

A Either input an address into the search field of the map when on the Add Content page, or zoom into the location and click where you want to place a marker on the map. Either way, you can change it later if you think the address you want to feature for your article was wrong or has changed.

Q I put a marker on my article’s map and then zoomed further out - but the zoomed out view doesn’t show up in my published article’s map.

A Google automatically saves exactly the view in which you changed the red marker on the map. Any changes done after moving the red marker are not saved. To make changes, just click the marker again - this will remove the marker, and you can then zoom in/out and place your marker again. Change your marker as often as you like when editing your article.

Q After having registered, my new homepage on goGunter is now always my relocation (or home) city. How can I get back to viewing the worldwide directory for all countries and cities?

A Click the goGunter logo on the top left. Clicking the “Home” button will always get you back to your relocation or home city (if you haven’t specified a relocation city).

Q I don’t see the profile of goGunter members.

A You need to register to see the details of each member.
